Last month when I didn't find a solution, I completed rebuilt the R2 server from the ground up. Then I started approving needed updates so that my wsus would be all inclusive for anything being built from scratch.
The first round seemed to download and install just fine. Then upon approving a second massive round of updates, I started getting the same error messages again and nothing will download.
I also had the OS look out to MS for it's updates to get them fully complete direction from MS instead of internally in case it needed any kind of certs or something that my local WSUS instance wasn't getting.
I had found this article about possible causes, but it's a crap article because there is nothing listed for possible solutions:. They are both going out the same pipe and firewalls so I can't see it being any kind of transfer issues. Hopefully someone else can help me out with suggestions.
Since I got an initial approval to go through on a fresh install, I could go through and rebuild it from scratch yet again, then approve updates in smaller batches to try to get an idea of WHEN they start to fail downloading. WSUS cannot download any new updates starting a few weeks ago. I see a number of event logs similar to the one below. I am running Windows R2 and have looked in the optional updates section but do not see any root certificate updates for that machine.
